Go Plus! - A totally different Experience.

It started with everyone gathering in the huddle room. All strangers around me, I knew none, no one knew me either. I was wondering how I would gel with these people coming from different walks of life. Some of them came in groups. High levels of enthusiasm was floating around. We then stared our journey to the resort. Ravish, a highly energetic fellow stated playing "Antyakshari" with the front bench girls. I must quote his extreme knowledge of Hindi songs. It was more entertaining to us at the back seat. We were accompanied by a group of freshly graduated students who were very much excited about the entire trip.

After a two and a half hour tiresome journey in a small bus, we landed at the resort. The resort was adjacent to the main road with numerous coconut trees and myriad monkeys. The milieu was fresh and exhilarating, away from the crowd. Our encounter with fresh breeze was inexplicable. Spicy snacks and hot tea was served along with a warm welcome. We were given twin sharing rooms with all the comforts - AC, TV, hot water, luxury cots. We met our instructor Super Sandy shortly after that. After having a brief introduction session, we proceeded for dinner. Dinner was sumptuous and was served along with the desserts. After having a meal, we all proceeded to the games arena. Everyone started playing games of their choice and started to socialize. We played Foosball and it was extreme fun - I personally enjoyed a lot - probably because we were winning every time! We played various games - caroms, TT, Foosball and slept off late at around 2:00AM. I couldn't get sound sleep probably because of the new place.

Next morning we had our introductions again. We played numerous games that illustrated various values that Oracle follows. It was a totally different experience altogether. I got a chance to know myself. Conquer myself - fears, strengths, apprehension, evaluate my way of thinking. We learnt a lesson that loyalty is the most important factor in any business or personal relationship. People invest confidence in you only when you are loyal and abide by your word. We also learnt that we should stick together as a team to be successful. We should be integrated in though and action. We should listen to the leader and feel responsible for our actions, rather than blaming the leader if something falls apart. Also in a business setup, communication plays an important role. A message that is not well-communicated to the team leads to a complete disaster. We should have a sound communication amongst ourselves as well as with other teams that are dependent of us. We should always be fair, we should not indulge in plagiarism. Also if an uncomfortable situation arises, play safe and be fair. We should also follow the business Ethics or etiquette. We should be professional in our actions and thoughts. We should also thrive to innovate and think out-of-the-box. When someone is dealing with a customer, he should feel extremely responsible and see to it that customer is satisfied. We should live up to the expectations of our customers. Our work/product should demonstrate quality. We went for rappelling, an adventurous sport early next morning to a nearby rocky place. Everyone must experience the adrenalin pump when you stand at the verge of the rock, at least once in a life time. The treasure hunt that we played at the end of the day was very much entertaining. Rummaging through bushes and grass to find clues in the dark using torches was fun. Our team finally won it though. “Dum-Sharats” was fun too. All the games we played taught us a lesson, if rightly taken.

All in all, here are the values of Oracle. In fact these should be followed by everyone to be successful in life/work. Integrity, Mutual respect, communication, fairness, team work, Innovation, customer satisfaction, Ethics and Quality. It was very much fun to know and interact with strangers. We played games together and known each other personally. New contacts and connections were built. So many different people and as many different personalities. The skit we did at the end, I must say, we cracked it. We came out with an innovative idea. We were strong and clear in communication it to the masses. I not only explored others, but myself too. I played a role of a leader, a teammate, I churned out ideas, I demanded people, I bossed over them, sometimes listened to them, worked under stress and many more. Now I'm a changed individual! With many more responsibilities and hope to grow up in this world. It's time to act now! It's time to put all these things into practice. I'm sure anyone will come out with flying colors if the above values are followed strictly.

Team Outing

Everyone was jubilant mainly because it was a Friday; an end of a tiresome week; Added to that, the thought of a team lunch multiplied everyone’s enthusiasm. The Go-karting plan literally blew everyone and everyone was ecstatic. Enthusiasm was growing exponentially. We generally go out to places that are nearby, but this time we preferred taste to distance and chose to travel 10kms to relish good food. Amidst Bangalore traffic, we hustled our way to “Cafe Masala”. The menu had a myriad of varieties, especially the non-veg varieties. :P We savored all the varieties of appetizers, main course and what not. The Desserts section was mouth watering with a chocolate fountain, various kinds of puddings, cakes, fruits and the list was endless. Tasty food is one thing that no one can resist. Soon we were satiated, unable to move and tottered our way out of the hotel.

We then set out to eZone, which hosts various sports. One of them was Go-karting. It was very much fun. All of us were very enthusiastic about the racing cars. The twists and turns of the track, the competition, the race – everything seemed so lively. It was a very good chance for us to socialize and get to know each other better.

I feel such team outings help us in disowning our apprehensions and fears. It develops camaraderie among the teammates and also helps towards a better productive team. Thanks everyone for giving me some moments to cherish for my lifetime.

You Know You Grew Up in India in the 90s When…

You Know You Grew Up in India in the 90s When…

1) You know the words to ‘In-pin-safety-pin’ and ‘akkad-bakkad’ by heart
2) Cricket is almost a religion for you, and you idolize at least one of Rahul Dravid/Sachin Tendulkar/Saurav Ganguly
3) You have read at least some Chacha Chaudhary or Tinkle comics
4) You’ve watched Shaktimaan on TV at least once in your life. And you can immediately recognize the character when you see him.
5) You have some ‘NRI’ relatives.
6) You couldn’t wait for it to be December so you could have the Toblerone chocolates your NRI relatives brought you
7) You watched Cartoon Network, and then the late night movies on TNT that came after Cartoon Network ended.
8) You watched corny dubbed versions of Small Wonder, Silver Spoon, and I Dream of Jeanie
9) You were THRILLED when McDonald’s opened in your neighborhood (or even eight kilometers away)
10) A visit to Pizza Hut used to mean a special treat

28) You most probably saw Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge at the cinema at least once. You also fantasized about singing songs in mustard fields as in the movie.
29) You have seen David Dhawan and Govinda movies and laughed at them.
31) You have said ‘haw’ or ‘yuck’ when you saw people kissing in English movies. (nowadays kids are used to it!)

31) You thought seeing English movies and speaking English made you the coolest thing ever.
32) You remember the Gujarat earthquake very clearly and could possibly tell everyone EXACTLY what you were doing when the earthquake occurred (yes, this happened in 2001, January 26, 2001, to be exact — but this group is about the things that Indian kids that GREW UP in the 90s remember and identify with).
33) Barbies for girls, and GI Joes for boys were the ultimate status symbols. You just wanted more more more and more. And how can I forget Hot Wheels, for both boys and girls?

48) You used to Fuzen gum. You also chewed Big (big) Babool and/or Boom Boom Boomer chewing gum. They were bright pink and disgusting tasting, but you loved them for the temporary tattoos.

53) You have, at some point of time, worn GAP clothes (real or fake) like SRK in KKHH.
54) Seemingly senseless acronyms like SRK, DDLJ, DTPH, KKHH actually make sense to you..

56) Baskin Robbins ice-cream was THE thing to have!
57) You know what Campa Cola is. And you also knew that Coca Cola was THE drink.

59) When all backpacks (or ’schoolbags’) and water bottles and tiffin boxes had strange cartoon characters that were hybrid versions of seven or eight different characters, and you still bought them, because a green man wih a water pistol, boots, a jet-pack, Johnny bravo hair, a rajasthani mustache, gloves, and underwear (long johns) over his pants, called ‘Mr. X’ was OBVIOUSLY a status symbol.
60) You remember the Nirma tikia jingle.
61) You remember the Nirma girl.
62) You remember the ‘doodh doodh piyo glass full doodh’ ad and also the ‘laal kaala peela, gulabi hara neela classic hai badia bristles wala’ and 'roz khao ande' ads.
63) You grew up reading, if you read at all, some or all of Nancy Drews, Enid Blyton books, Hardy Boys, Babysitters Club, Animorphs, Goosebumps, Sweet Valley series, Judy Blumes, and Tintin, or Archie comics. Because naturally, reading foreign authors made you much cooler than reading Tinkle.
64) Towards the late 90s (1998-99) at least some of us started our Harry Potter obsessions!

70) You remember parzan dastur sayin "JALEBI!!!!" in the Dhara Ad
71) You eagerly awaited Friendship Day, so you could give friendship bands to all your friends, and get bands from them in return. Then, of course, those with the most bands loved to show them off.
72) Backstreet Boys' "Quit Playing Games" was one of the first english songs that you LOVED!
73) Andaz Apna Apna is and most probably will always be your favourite comedy flick!! "Aila Jhakaas!!!"
74) This list made you smile.

And I miss that age, it was sooo awesome!

From a Freshman's Perspective

The long wait for the offer letter has come to an end and the journey started on 5th October when I stepped into one of the Software giants, Oracle.
This is the place I always wanted to be a part of.I felt very lucky to have achieved my goal. Soon this goal seemed very small when I actually went a mile away and looked back. Life is a journey and one has to set goals and change directions continuously in order to reach the final & ultimate goal, which is always uncertain and hazy. New people, new milieu, new work, new friends, new manager but the same old me!

Big brands are always standard in every possible way. They are very well established with good infrastructure, well mannered staff and well executed plans. Induction, training and then they let newbies onto work. Induction taught me things that I did not even have a remote knowledge of about Oracle. Technical trainings helped me in honing my knowledge and also in gaining knowledge of new technologies. Then for the first time laid my hands on the work environment. Had so many doubts in my mind, perplexing me every minute. What is workspace? What is worklist? How do I get started? Whom to contact in case of doubts? Soon everything seemed to be a passing cloud and I conquered every nook and corner. Thanks to my friendly teammates and amicable manager for helping me onboard quicker than I expected.

Then came the buggy things, the bugs! I understood so many things about work only while fixing bugs. Gained some theoretical knowledge from the seniors at work but I strongly feel bugs helped me visualize and understand the product as a whole. I soon realized I am no more a fresher, now I'm an experienced person too! I've 5months experience! Questions followed..Am I behaving as an experienced person? can I guide my juniors? can I ever become a role model for some one? Will someone really look up to me? Will I be ever able to emulate my seniors at work? After introspecting a bit I realized, knowing about product, fixing bugs is a small thing compared to the big things yet to come in future. There are many more things to discover at work after I master bug-fixing and I feel confident about the current product.

I want to see my self in another 2 years as a product owner and taking the credits for developing an entire product on my own. Not leaving a leeway for bugs to enter my code and even if something crawls in, I should be able to fix it in minutes. Giving presentations to people in other parts of the world about my product, answering their questions on the fly. Discussing important things with seniors and helping juniors at work. No meeting should be complete without my presence. Selecting new aspirants from campuses across our country. Traveling to at least one place outside India. I believe nothing is impossible and here I stand, confidently, with a glint in eyes indicating my dream will come true soon! I am what I am, the same old me but with new aspirations and expectations.

The Professor of righteousness

It was 6th of January of the New Year, 2009.

I’m not excited about PS-II anymore as I’ve been in this business for about a semester now. It was New Year’s Eve and hence celebrated with parents at Hyderabad and landed back in Bangalore with a hope and wish to learn more and new in this New Year. Everything started again, like a sequel to an action movie. Rushed to BITS PDC and got registered for the II semester of PS-II. Was little disappointed as my previous instructor, with whom we had a good rapport has left to Germany. At the same time was apprehensive about the new professor, after having learnt that it was A N Pant, got my tensions multiplied! Prof. A N Pant! Everyone knows him as a strict disciplinarian and as I have never been closely associated with him, had to follow others in believing that he really is a martinet. He spoke like a usual PS faculty of threatening students on the very first day about the Grades. Everything was fine; he seemed to me like a cool man.

Days passed. I always believed in punctuality and being sincere to what ever I took up, which made my manager speak a bit high about me in front of the professor - which was soothing for his ears. He started showering faith and we were a bit special to him compared to his remaining 28 students. Whenever he told us that he likes us more than his other students, we used to feel ecstatic and wanted to do everything possible to gain his confidence and never let him down. We’ve always been faithful to him as we were to our parents. We regarded him with reverence and worshipped his good words. He spoke about building up good personality and traits that make one attain the greatest heights of success. He taught us about the importance of character and passed us his noble thoughts about the four pillars.

It was an unfortunate day that I had been to Hyderabad on a weekend and was returning back to Bangalore on a Monday morning, when my train got delayed by 2hrs. I did not inform my professor about my going late to office that day. Usually affable professor, showered rage and I realized how hard it would be for someone to digest the fact, that someone special, whom you trust, has now backstabbed you, grabbed your confidence in him and crushed the good will. I felt guilty and could not look straight into his eyes. Time passed and he regained the confidence and faith in us. Professor helped me in many ways and conducted the PS-II program in the spirit in which it has to be conducted.

Now, although it’s hard to part and go away, its time to implement the things learnt from the professor and put them into action. I’m highly grateful to him for giving me superb guidance in just 6 months time and making me a man out of a boy. My venerations towards him are far beyond words and I would never forget such a professor who walked into my life and lit up a candle of faith and good behavior and walked away. As long as I live, I would never forget my professor who has taught me lessons beyond what text books could capture. His principles & his ideals are worth carrying forward. Jai Ho!

My Jolly Trip

It all started on a fine day, when abhi came up with an idea of a trip. I don't know how we got that idea of visiting such a consecrated place like Tirupathi. We set on a trip in an innova after having a lot of discussions among ourselves. We were 6 in all and enjoyed the trip to the fullest.

Strated at around 9 PM in the night. started picking up everyone from their places and it was at this point where we came across a flock of crows saying bye bye to abhi. :) Started the journey and everyone wanted to listen to some ghost story (when going on a trip to a sacred place :P), so i started off with Gandhi-137, bitsian ghost story. Every one listened to it as if they were listening to it for the very first time.

The adventure of taking the steps to the hill-top of tirupathi was amazing. Counting the number of steps and having mangoes with chilli powder, taking breaks after every 100/200 steps. I can really never forget that in my life.

Then we were into the full jolly mood and started giving nick names to everyone it was at this point that swathi became RUCHI and rohit became ROHI/RUHI. :P Another interesting candidate, sucharitha, who is actually a silent thriller, was named SUCHI. And I became KEECHA. RUCHI slipped into a gutter while washing her face and escaped with just a scratch.

We visited Tirupathi, Sri kala hasthi, Tala Kona water falls, Vellore Golden Temple and started back to Bangalore. Played so many games on our way back, one of which was invented by me. :)
I can never forget the tala kona water falls where we got drenched under the elevated water falls. It was a great delight to see picturescue waterfall in talakona forest amidst numerous monkeys.

All in all it was very very jocund trip and I can never forget the joy and mirth we had during the trip, for the rest of my life. Thanks to rohit and abhi for taking the initiative for the whole event and for giving us the sweet memories to cherish.
